1st Spanish Cohort of Spaniards in Perth

This is the tombstone of Ammonius from the first cohort of Spaniards dates around the year 80 found at Ardoch Perthshire. The cohort was based in Maryport south west of Carlisle

This can be seen in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow

It reads “To the sprits of the departed Ammonius, son of Damio, centurian of the First Cohort of Spaniards, of 27 years service. His heirs had this erected. ” A centurian commanded 80 men in a cohort and served longer than the normal 25 years. There were about 500 men in the cohort made up of cavalry and soldiers.
