On a visit to the huge Roman camp near Cupar on the River Eden, I wondered how the Romans managed to get goods and supplies to the forts and camps that were not near any known Roman roads. Using QGIS software I was able to map every Roman fort and Camp in Scotland to find that nearly everyone was on a river. It is known that the Romans shipped goods up such rivers on small barges.
