First Aelian Cohort of Spaniards in Perth

This is the tombstone of Ammonius from the first cohort of Spaniards, dated around the year 80, found at Ardoch, Perthshire. The cohort was based in Maryport, southwest of Carlisle

It reads “To the spirits of the departed Ammonius, son of Damio, Centurion of the First Cohort of Spaniards, of 27 years’ service. His heirs had this erected. ” A Centurion commanded 80 men in a cohort and served longer than the normal 25 years. There were about 500 men in the cohort, made up of cavalry and soldiers.
