This fort is next to the Falkirk Wheel and is said to be the best one to visit on the Antonine Wall.
Visit Rough Castle Roman Fort
📍 Location: Rough Castle, near Bonnybridge and the Falkirk Wheel
👁 What survives: Clear earthworks of the fort, the Antonine Wall, ditch and defensive features, including the distinctive lilia pits.
⭐ Best for: Seeing a Roman fort in its Antonine Wall landscape and understanding how the frontier’s defences worked together.
🥾 Visit: An outdoor archaeological site with grass paths and uneven ground in places. Conditions can change with the weather.
🏛 Nearby Roman places: Watling Lodge, Callendar House and other surviving sections of the Antonine Wall.

Inscriptions name the Sixth Cohort of Nervians and record building work. They need not indicate the presence of its entire establishment.
