The First Cohort of Hamians (Syria)

Hamian archers were deployed to Hadrian’s Wall at Carvoran Fort and then subsequently the Antonine Wall at Bar Hill fort leaving altars and tombstones.

Re-enactment groups dress up as Hamian archers with robes to the ankle. There is very little contemporary evidence. Using AI and a text description based on the statue above the following images were produced.

Trajan Column created in 112 AD has several archers in dress – one of these pictures has the long robe.

One of the interesting things about Hama is that the Romans used water wheels from 200 BC to supply the city with water and these wheels are still in use today. These wheels can be found all over Europe and a complete one can be found near Huevla in southern Spain.
