The Inverurie district contains some of the strongest evidence for Roman campaigning in north-east Scotland. Camps at Kintore and Durno reveal armies moving and assembling in the Don valley and Garioch.
Amazing fact
The camp at Durno is exceptionally large and has often been interpreted as a gathering place for a major Roman army.

Why this area mattered
The surrounding lowlands offered space for large forces and routes towards the coast, Deeside and the north. The landscape also features prominently in discussion of Agricola’s final campaigns.

Kintore
Successive camps, ovens and finds reveal more than one episode of Roman military use.
Durno

Bennachie landscape
The prominent hill and surrounding plain have encouraged Mons Graupius theories, but the battlefield remains unidentified.
What can you see today?
Use the shared map and views across the Garioch to appreciate the scale. Archaeological interpretation must distinguish established camps from speculative battlefield locations.
