South of Stonehaven, the camp at Raedykes occupies high ground overlooking routes through the Mearns. It forms part of the evidence for Roman campaigning north of Strathmore.
Amazing fact
The enormous camp at Raedykes could accommodate a campaigning army of many thousands rather than the small garrison of a permanent fort.

Why this area mattered
The coastal corridor provided access towards the Dee and north-east Scotland. An army moving through this country needed defensible overnight camps, water and routes suitable for baggage and animals.

Mons Graupius debate
Raedykes has featured in arguments about Agricola’s campaign, although no battlefield identification is proven.
What can you see today?
Raedykes is understood through its earthworks, aerial views and setting. Avoid presenting it as the confirmed site of Mons Graupius.
